Michael Phelps- Pictures Revealed of Marijuana

Yesterday, I got to school and sat in my english class when I heard people asking if the had seen the news that morning of the photo that was posted in a tabloid, "News of the World". What happened to the positive role model that everyone was cheering on this summer in the 2008 Beijing Olympics when Phelps was about to receive his 8th gold medal of that games, a world record? The picture was of Phelps smoking marijuana on which he commented, "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

Even with Phelps' sincere apology, can his image of arguably the greatest athlete of all time ever be looked in the same way? Can my previous blog about Phelps still be looked at in the same manner? This video describes Phelps' apology.

This is what sucks about being famous. The papparazzi start cracking down on your every fault and mistakes, no matter how inspiring you are to other people. If he did marijuana, he did marijuana. Millions of others have done it also. Not saying that it's okay to do it at all, I'm just saying, Michael Phelps is a human being just like the rest of us. He's a good swimmer, and he does pot. So what? None of your business.

disappointing how a role model like that can suddenly become a crazy party animal. the media has gone to his head.

I think that Michael Phelps just messed up and he knows it. One little slip shouldn't affect the way that we look at him for the rest of his life. To me he is still a very inspiring American athlete.

It's sad how influential the media is. I'm going to make an assumption and say that that probably wasn't the first time Michael Phelps smoked pot. He just got caught this time. Obviously, it hasn't affected his athletic ability, so he shouldn't be looked at any differently.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. In one respect, Michael Phelps is a just like any other 23 year old. He made a mistake and feels remorseful. Still though, he knows he's looked up to by many children and should've thought twice before doing what he did. Either way, I think it's stupid how much me idolize celebrities. If this happened to anyone else, it obviously wouldn't make the news.

It's so dissapointing to hear about things like this. I thought Michael Phelps was this fantastic role model but now its hard to have the same feelings towards him.

I think that the way an athlete choses to spend his or her off season is up to them. With that bring said I think Michael Phelps, as do the rest of us, has a right to chose what we want to do. However, it would have been better if this "event" wouldn't have been publicized purely for the sect of world culture still heavily predjudiced towards cannabis consumption.
